Master Recording Service

Master Recording Services In Pittsburgh, PA

Similar to mixing, mastering starts with pinning down the expected final sound. From there, whatever steps are needed to get the project to that point are taken. If we have to go back to mix adjustments, I have no problem addressing them within my own mix, or if it is an external engineer’s mix, reaching out to them expressing my concerns. Mastering is bringing that mix up to a modern sounding finalized sound. I don’t master to a set measurement, dynamic range, LUFS, but simply master to what sounds correct for the project. A hardcore band, it has to be loud. A movie soundtrack, it can be dialed back. If I’m doing both the mixing and mastering of a project, the workflow tends to mesh into one, rather than a rigid two step process. We live in the future: we aren’t limited by technology or tape machines. We can make adjustments to the master settings and mix settings simultaneously until we are both satisfied with the final results.

Recording Services In Pittsburgh, PA FAQS

What is the mastering process for Very Tight?

First, we’ll get the files from you. Then we’ll figure out a plan of attack once we listen through and assess the project. If any mix adjustments are needed, we can put together a list of notes for the mix engineer to address. Once the mix is locked in, we’ll master the project in a style that fits with the music.

Do you master all genres of music?

Yes. We’ve mastered everything from heavy metal to indie rock, acoustic ballads to ambient noise. No matter your genre, we’ll make sure it shines.

Can you master songs mixed at another studio?

Yes, of course. We master music that’s been mixed by other engineers.

What file type should I send for mastering?

Please send a stereo WAV or AIFF file.

How many revisions are included with mastering?

Two revisions are included with a project. Due to the nature of some outboard gear, recalls can be somewhat involved and lengthy so we try to limit revisions within mastering. In most cases, when something doesn’t sound correct during the mastering process, it is an issue that can be addressed in the mix rather than mastering. We encourage you to reach out to the mix engineer if that’s the case.

How loud will my track be after mastering?

Your song will be loud — but also clean and dynamic. We understand different genres require different intensities.

Is mastering included in your recording or mixing packages?

It can be! It is preferred that we see the project through from start to finish. Ask about bundled pricing if you’d like us to handle your recording, mixing, and mastering all under one roof.
